1. Objectives

The different aspects and themes included in this subject are aimed at providing to the students with the required tools to understand landscapes as dynamic entities and as the physical and social materialisation of human action in different environments. The comprehensive study of urban, peri-urban, rural or natural landscapes will be the starting point to understand the expectancies that landscapes create, their general or particular problems, the consequences of any intervention on them and to advance in the definition of landscape projects. Understanding landscapes requires not only observation but interpretation, which implies the searching and finding of those factors which explain their present configuration and their future evolution. It is about learning to LOOK and UNDERSTAND landscapes both in space and time. By an integral and global consideration of Landscape, the subject pretends to consolidate the student’s abilities to analyse, understand and design the Landscape from a realistic and holistic point of view.

This integral approach to Landscape, from its origins to the present times, ends in the development of a major project, which provides to the student the opportunity to apply the formal systems and design tools acquired during the study of the subject.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE (for Spanish Students): The students should have passed the compulsory subjects of Urban Planning of the 2nd and 3rd courses.
