Resume

Manuel L. Romero received his PhD degree from the Construction Engineering Department of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain in 1999. He also completed his education with several research stays at University of California at Berkeley. He has been involved in undergraduate and graduate courses in a broad range of subjects around structural engineering. Particularly, he has organized and undertaken courses in elasticity and strength of materials, structures and design of steel and concrete structures for undergraduate students. Also, he has organized and participated in graduate courses of design of structures under accidental/extraordinary actions (fire and earthquakes).

He has wide research experience regarding numerical models and experimental analysis of steel, concrete and steel-concrete composite structures, where he has held a number of national and international grants as principal investigator. Currently he is the coordinator of a European research project from research funds from coal and steel with the goal to improve the Eurocode 4. His current research interests are focused in the utilization of innovative materials for safety and sustainability of structures by using new steel alloys (shape-memory alloys, high strength steels or fire resistant steels), new types of concretes (geopolymer bindings and ultra-high strength concretes) and the combination of all of them into composite steel-concrete, hybrid or lightweight structures.

At present, Manuel L. Romero is leading a research group on steel and steel-concrete composite structures at UPV, being also the director of the research institute ICITECH with more than 40 faculty members.
