Guided visit to the graves of Paterna: Wednesday, November 20th

The year 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of a historical event that has marked the social, political and cultural life of our country: the defeat and exile of hundreds of thousands of citizens. This exhibition presents a selection of texts, images, places and people distributed in thematic panels with which we want to reflect the wide range of circumstances that accompanied that terrible event. The aim is that knowledge about the exile helps us to analyze its causes and to learn from the struggle to build a better world.

Responsible: Francisco Collado Cerveró (Library of the Facultat de Belles Arts)

Guided visit to the mass graves of the Paterna Cemetery, on November 20th.

The visit will be conducted by Vicent Gabarda Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Valencia,  Miquel Mezquida and Alejandro Calpe archaeologists of the Association Archaeoanthro and Francisco Collado, researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de València on the facts derived from the repression and exile following the civil war.

The objective is to learn about the historical context of the civil war and the emergence of mass graves in the cemetery of Paterna, where the remains of more than 2,200 people shot by Franco’s repression are located.

About the graves, recently the Diputación de Valencia has produced the documentary ‘Las semillas que van creciendo. Fosa 22’, by Óscar Navarro and Sergi Tarín, with the aim of making visible that the drama of the repressed are inherited by the relatives and continues with the lack of truth, justice and reparation. In addition, there will be a visit to the Terrer, the wall where, among others, the doctor and politician Joan Baptista Peset y Aleixandre, former rector of the University of Valencia, was shot. There will also be a reading, by the participants, of texts related to historical memory.

Registration is free and open until November 18th.

The visit will take place in the afternoon, from 3.45 p.m. to 6.45 p.m. and is aimed at the entire university community of the UPV (PAS, PDI, students and members of Alumni). The displacement will be by bus leaving at 3.45 p.m. from the Avd. Dels Tarongers at the height of the streetcar stop of the Carrasca, and the return, from Paterna, will be at 6.15 p.m. and the arrival will be at the same place.

The visit is free for anyone interested in participating, although places are limited. It is only necessary to register in advance, until November 18th (11.55 p.m.), through this form.
