The action of “rereading” goes beyond a simple review of the content of the collections that, since 1990, make up the artistic heritage of the Universitat Politècnica de València. It is a critical exercise that invites us to re-examine the typologies of works, the movements represented and the cultural collections that contribute to create lines of history and narrative flows in our archive and institutional memory.
This rereading implies a double action: on the one hand, it seeks to recover works by women artists that, on occasion, have been forgotten. The invisibility of these works is the result of a system that decides what is archived and what is forgotten; identifying, selecting and preserving these creations is, at the same time, an exercise in rewriting our history. On the other hand, it is a further turn to reduce gender inequality, because only 32% of the works in the Art Fund are by women, hence the need to put these works in a central place.
In the cultural life of the university, it is fundamental to incorporate, recognize and celebrate equality. As an institution, we must be agents of change in society, challenging stereotypes and enlivening the diversity of perspectives. From a gender perspective, the rereading of the Art Fund becomes an exercise in re-signification, an invitation to discover new narratives and open spaces for dialogue that enrich our understanding of reality.
This exhibition reaffirms the university’s commitment to equality. “Rereading the UPV Art Fund” is not only an exhibition, but also a proposal to rethink our cultural heritage, celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive and plural academic community, in which each work and each artist finds its space and recognition.
