Frequently Asked Questions
University entrance exams (PAU)
Will the PAU fee cover both exams (ordinary and extraordinary)?
The PAU fees must be paid for each exam. The fee is the same amount, 78.20 euros, regardless of how many exams you take (whether it’s the compulsory phase only, both the compulsory and voluntary phase, or only voluntary phase).
Are there any discountsavailable for the PAU fee?
There are exemptions and reductions for the PAU fee under the following circumstances:
• Exemption from full payment: You will not be required to pay the PAU fee if you meet any of these criteria: disability, large family of special category, single-parent family of special category, victim of gender violence, victim of terrorism, victim of social exclusion, in the child protection system, in the judicial re-education system, or if you received honors in the second year of high school or the extraordinary prize of high school.
• 50% reduction: You will receive a 50% discount on the PAU fee if you belong to a large family of general category or a single-parent family of general category.
Do the general core subject linked to the baccalaureate modality (Mathematics II, Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences II, Latin II or Fundamentals of Art II) in the compulsory phase count twice? What about the foreign language?
Yes, the grade of these subjects count twice: it is used to calculate the average of the compulsory phase and also for weighting, along with the other 4 (at most) voluntary phase subjects that are considered for weighting. The foreign language in the compulsory phase is treated the same way.
If I don’t take any voluntary phase subjects, will the general core subject from the compulsory phase still be weighted? What about the foreign language?
Yes, even if you don’t take any subjects in the voluntary phase, you can still achieve maximum of 14 points for university admission in certain degrees, as the general core subject taken linked to the modality (such as Mathematics II, Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences II, Latin II or Fundamentals of Art II) is automatically weighted (in those degrees where it is weighted), the same as the foreign language in the compulsory phase. Keep in mind that the general core subject linked to the modality always scores 0.2, in those branches where it is weighted.
If I take the voluntary phase, will the subject from the compulsory phase also be weighted?
Yes, students can have a maximum of 6 weighted subjects, the 4 subjects from the voluntary phase, the general core subject from the compulsory phase and the foreign language from the compulsory phase. The university admission system will select the 2 highest grades from these 6 subjects to calculate the student’s best admission grade for each degree program.
If I am an international student—either studying at an institution in the Valencian Community under an international educational system or coming directly from another country—am I eligible for admission to Valencian universities?
Yes, it is important to differentiate between countries that have an admission agreement with Spain and those that do not. The admission requirements will be determined by the UNED. If the student is required to take the PAU for admission to Spanish universities, these tests must be taken through the UNED as PCE exams. The UNED will issue a credential and administer the exams, which will then allow the student to proceed with the university pre-registration process. For more information, you can refer to the document on Admission for international students.
What will the UNED exams be like for international students?
Details about the UNED PCE exams can be found on the UNED website, specifically at UNEDasiss.UNED.
Can I be exempt from the Valencian exam in the PAU?
Students who have received a positive exemption resolution for Valencian in the PAU are not required to take the “Valencian: Language and Literature II” exam as part of the university entrance exam. Educational institutions can grant this exemption only if the student meets one of the following conditions:
a) Has obtained a positive exemption resolution for Valencian in 4th year of ESO or in 1st or 2nd year of the baccalaureate.
b) Has received a positive exemption resolution for Valencian in the PAU from the General Directorate of Educational Policy.

Pre-registration for International Students
Pre-registration for students from the Spanish Educational System Abroad
The process is the same as for students studying in Spain. After completing the second year of high school, students take the university entrance exams (PAU) to obtain their university entrance grade. Pre-registration is completed online through the virtual assistant provided by the Generalitat Valenciana: www.preinscripcion.gva.es
Pre-registration from international educational systems
For admission to the UPV, students must first complete two essential procedures. The first is accreditation, which is done through the UNEDasiss website, and othe second is homologation, which is processed on the website of the Spanish Ministry of Education. For tstudents coming from educational systems within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) or countries with reciprocity agreements, only accreditation is required. For students from other countries, both homologation and accreditation are necessary. It is strongly recommended to begin these procedures with the UNED and the Ministry as earlyas possible. Even if the accreditation application with UNED has not been resolved, students must still complete the pre-registration process on time.
What is the UNEDasiss accreditation?
The UNEDasiss Accreditation is a digital certificate that enables students to participate in university admission processes in Spain. It involves the evaluation of academic records obtained in international educational systems in a standardized and regulated manner. This accreditation also includes the scores from specific competency tests (PCE) taken at UNED, as well as other services requested by the student.

What do I need for university admission?
If you have completed the baccalaureate, you must pass the university entrance exams (PAU). However, you can be admitted without taking the PAU if you hold a Higher Vocational Education and Training, Higher Sports Technician or Higher Technician in Plastic Arts and Design qualification. It is also possible if you already possess another university degree. For this who have completed pre-university studies in an international educational system, you must go through the UNED process. In all cases, university pre-registration is required ro secure a spot in a degree program.
What is the NAU (University Entrance Grade)?
The NAU is calculated as a weighted average: 60% from the baccalaureate average grade and 40% from the compulsory phase grade. To be considered, the compulsory phase grade must be at least 4 points. You will pass the PAU if your NAU is equal to or greater than 5 points. Your NAU score is valid indefinitely, and the highest possible score is 10 points.
What is the university admission score?
The university admission score is determined by the weighting of subjects, including those from the voluntary phase and certain compulsory phase subjects, which are assigned weights of 0.1 or 0.2 depending on the chosen degree. The maximum possible score is 14 point
At the UPV, we have created a grade simulator,(for informational purposes only, with no legal validity) to help you estimate your NAU and admission scores:
Grade Simulator http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_simula.frmNotas?P_IDIOMA=c
What are the cut-off grades and where can I find them?
The cut-off grades are not set by the public universities,; instead they represent the admission grade of the last student admitted to a specific particular degree at a particular university. These cut-off grades fluctuate slightly each year based on demand—meaning they are influenced by the scores of students entering that program.
You can find the cut-off grades for each program on the websites of the public universities in the Comunitat Valenciana. For example, in the UPV:
http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_futuroalumno.notascorte?p_idioma=c
And on the Generalitat Valenciana website:

However, it’s important to keep in mind that you will be competing in the same quota as high school students who do take the PAU, These students can achieve ar university admission grade of up to 14 points, while your maximum admission grade will be 10 points. Depending on the degree you want to study, and considering the cut-off grade, you may choose to take the voluntary phase of the PAU exams to raise your grade. This step is optional.
What if I don’t get a spot in the degree I want to study?
- You can take the voluntary phase of the PAU to improve your grade.
- You can start another degree and, when the “continuation of studies” application period opens (mid-February to early March) apply for a transfer to the degree you originally wanted to study. Please not that: 1) You must have at least 30 recognized from your current studies to apply for the transfer. and 2) Very few spots are awarded on the basis of the university academic record, i.e., the grade. More information is available on the Student Services website:http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528248normalc.html
- You can pursue a Higher Vocational Education and Training (VET) cycle related to the degree you wish to study.

Who can apply for admission through continuation of studies?
Only students with partial official Spanish university studies or those with international university studies are eligible to apply for admission through continuation of studies.
How can I transfer my academic transcript from another university to the UPV?
To transfer your academic transcript to the UPV, you can follow two pathways:
Admission by Pre-Registration: In this case, credit recognition is conducted after you have enrolled at the UPV. The process for requesting credit recognition is carried out through the university’s intranet system.
Admission by Change of Studies: This requires a prior equivalency evaluation, with a minimum of 30 approved credits from your current studies. You’ll also need to pay the corresponding fee at your institution of origin and then complete your enrollment at the UPV. This option is compatible with the general pre-registration process, meaning you can apply through both routes simultaneously.
Enrollment and Tuition Fees
What costs are involved when enrolling in a university degree?
The UPV, as a public university, offers subsidized tuition fees. For first-year students, the cost typically ranges between €1,000 and €1,300, in addition to secretarial and homologation fees, which together are under €200.
The total cost of tuition depends on two main factors: the number of credits you register for and the price per credit, which is determined annually by the Conselleria. The cost per credit varies depending on the level of lab work involved in the Bachelor’s Degree program you’re enrolling in, as well as whether the course is a first, second, third, or subsequent enrollment (i.e., if you are repeating subjects). For detailed fee information, you can consult the fees decree via this link:
http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528304normalc.html
In addition to the credits you register for, you must pay the following fees:
– Opening of a file: If it’s your first time enrolling in a program..
– Official Academic Certificate (CAO): This records your university entrance exam (PAU) grades.
– Issuance/maintenance of Student ID card.
– School insurance: Mandatory if you are under 28 years old.
What are the methods of payment?
You can choose from several payment methods to pay your tuition :
- Direct debit in full: Paid in a single installment.
- Direct debit in two installments: Split into two payments.
- Direct debit in monthly installments: Spread across 8 months.
- Credit card in full: Paid in a single transaction.
- Credit card in two installments: Divided into two payments.
- During the self-enrollment process, you will select your preferred payment method. The first payment is not due until September.
Is there any exemptions from paying of tuition fees?
Yes, you will be exempt from paying tuition fees if you meet any of the following conditions: disability, large family in the special category, single parent family in the special category, victim of gender-based violence, victim of terrorism, social exclusion, child protection system, or involvement in the judicial re-education system. Additionally, if you received honors in the second year of baccalaureate or an extraordinary baccalaureate award, you are also eligible for exemption.
You will be exempt from paying 50% of your tuition fees if you meet any of the following conditions: large family in the general category or single parent family in the general category.
If I earn honors in any subject of theBachelor’s Degree during the course, will I be eligible for tuition exemption?
Yes, you will receive a discount on the tuition fees for the following academic year, equal to the cost of the same number of credits for which you received the honors, provided that you enroll in the same program of study.
Scholarships and grants
What scholarships and grants can I apply for?
There are three ways to apply for scholarships and grants.
-Scholarships from the Spanish administration, including the Ministry of Education and the Generalitat Valenciana, are available to individuals with Spanish nationality or permanent residency.
– Scholarships offered by the UPV and other private organizations are typically awarded based on merit and socioeconomic factors, regardless of nationality.
– Additionally, it is advisable for students to explore scholarship opportunities in their home country
If I have a baccalaureate honors degree, do I get my first year of college for free?
Students who achieve honors in the overall evaluation of their 2nd year of Baccalaureate or receive an extraordinary award in Baccalaureate are granted, for one time only during their first year, a full exemption from tuition fees. Additionally, they are entitled to a waiver of the registration fees for the university entrance exams (PAU)
What do I have to submit as proof of baccalaureate honors for the incoming school term?
When enrolling in a UPV degree program, the self-enrollment application will ask if you have received a baccalaureate honors degree or an extraordinary baccalaureate award. If you answer ‘yes,’ the university will consider this when exempting you from tuition fees (administrative fees still apply).
You must upload a scanned copy of the relevant document with your application:
• For baccalaureate honors: a certificate issued by your school.
• For the extraordinary baccalaureate award: a certificate verifying the award.
Through the intranet, you can check when your center validates the documents submitted during registration (typically starting in September). If any documents are incomplete or incorrect, the center’s administrative office will contact you to request the missing information
Accommodations
I don’t live in Gandia, where can I stay?
