International Distinction

UPV professor Luis Manuel Sánchez receives an award from the European Society for Engineering Education SEFI for his contribution to engineering education.

The European Society for Engineering Education ( SEFI) has awarded the distinction Fellowship Awardto the professor and professor of applied mathematics at the UPV Luis Manuel Sánchez, for his contribution to the advancement of engineering education. This recognition comes after a long service within SEFI and the worldwide engineering community.

Professor Sanchez has received this award during SEFI’s annual conference, held in Lausanne (Switzerland), and has indicated that it is “an honor” to receive this recognition from “one of the most respected organizations in the field of engineering education worldwide”. Together with Mr. Sánchez, this year has also been awarded the Fellowship Award to TU Munich Professor Gerhard Müller.

Maximum involvement with SEFI

Luis Sanchez served on SEFI’s Board of Directors for eleven years – from 2012 to 2023 – making him the longest serving member of this body to date. In this period, he played a vital role in shaping SEFI’s strategic initiatives, and served as Vice President in two intervals (2015-2020 and 2021-2023) in which he led global cooperation and forged partnerships with leading engineering education organizations around the world.

In addition to his duties at SEFI, the UPV professor is about to assume the position of president of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies ( IFEES). As for his career as a teacher and researcher, he has so far written more than a dozen texts for engineering education and about a hundred articles in various fields of engineering, ranging from functional analysis to the training of engineering personnel.

About SEFI

The European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) is the largest network of engineering education institutions and faculty in Europe, including the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeroespacial y Diseño Industrial ( ETSIADI) of the UPV. More specifically, it is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in Belgium in 1973 and is currently supported by around 450 partner institutions and companies around the world.

Its objectives include improving engineering education in Europe, strengthening the position in society of people working in engineering, participating in the political debate on higher education and having an impact on these policies, and improving communication between teachers, research staff and students, among others.
