Description of the title

The marine environment and coastal zones are of strategic importance due to the large number of uses, resources and services they provide. Many of the activities carried out in these environments can cause environmental impacts on ecosystems and, on occasions, be a source of conflict between users. This makes the sustainable management of the marine environment one of the basic objectives of the European Union to guarantee both environmental sustainability and the competitiveness of the economic activities that are nourished by this environment.

The need to respond to these new challenges has given rise to the need for specialized professionals who, with a strong focus on sustainability and technological applicability, are capable of applying solutions in strategic areas to ensure the sustainability of coastal territories and their communities, such as the assessment, management, environmental monitoring, control and planning of coastal systems.

Objectives of the degree

The objective of the master’s degree is to prepare specialists in analysis, evaluation and monitoring of the marine and coastal ecosystem. In this way, through scientific training and technological application, it aims to train professionals and researchers capable of:

Analyze the structure and functioning of ecosystems

Define indicators of good ecological/environmental status of ecosystems

Use of models to predict change and assess impacts

Use of more advanced and appropriate measurement techniques for monitoring ecological status

Establish measures for the prevention, management, exploitation and rehabilitation of ecosystems

Career opportunities

This master’s degree is designed to train professionals dedicated to management, planning, research and consultancy in the marine and coastal environment.

  • Management of the marine and coastal environment.
  • Planning in the public and private sector.
  • Research in the field of marine and coastal environment.
  • Consulting in non-governmental organizations.

Aimed primarily at

The master’s degree is aimed at graduates in scientific and technical areas. The most suitable profiles, due to its multidisciplinary nature, are:

  • Graduates in Environmental Sciences, Marine Sciences, Biology.
  • Agricultural Engineers, Forestry Engineers, Civil Engineers.
  • Forestry technical engineers, geological engineers, agricultural technical engineers, public works technical engineers.
  • Graduates in Geography, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or the degrees that replace them.

Other graduates in subjects related to the master’s degree.

The Employment and Internship Service of the Gandia Campus has agreements with many companies and organizations and offers different internships throughout the year.

Curricular

Within the optional training, you can do up to 6 ECTS credits (about 150 hours) of curricular internships in companies depending on the internship offer.

Extracurricular

In addition to the curricular internships, up to 600 more hours could be done in the extracurricular modality, for a total of 750 hours.

Research and access to Ph.

The professors of the Master in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (MEMIC) are involved in various research projects that you can learn more about in the personal file of each professor on the website of the Universitat Politècnica de València.

As it is an official master’s degree, students who successfully complete the master’s degree also have the opportunity to continue their studies in different Doctoral Programs both at the Universitat Politècnica de València and in other Universities of the European Higher Education Area.

Graduates of the master’s degree can continue their studies at the same Polytechnic School of Gandia by joining the research lines of the Doctoral Program in Marine and Coastal Science and Technology, which are the following:

  • Electronic devices, telematics networks and artificial intelligence techniques for monitoring marine and coastal environments
  • Marine ecosystem observation and modeling methodologies.
  • Oceanography, fisheries management and fluvial habitat modeling
  • New materials for acoustic field control and acoustic simulation with application to the marine and coastal environment.

Master’s Thesis

The Master’s Degree in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (MEMIC) has a subject of 12 credits that corresponds to the Master’s Final Project or TFM. The student will have to carry out an individual research work directed by a professor-tutor of the master’s degree.

The topic of the TFM can be proposed by the faculty, who offer topics for TFMs, or by the student himself/herself, who can propose a topic and reach an agreement with the tutor to register it. It is also possible to carry out a practical TFM in companies.

The dates and regulations of the TFM are common to all the masters of the Gandia campus.
