Inclusive Mobile Project

A team from UPV and BUPT in China is developing new apps to facilitate learning for people with functional diversity.

[ 13/05/2024 ]

A team of professors and researchers from the School of Telecommunications Engineering of the Universitat Politčcnica de Valčncia (UPV) and students from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) in China have designed and implemented new Virtual and Augmented Reality applications (apps) to facilitate learning for people with functional diversity. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Vocational Centre for People with Functional Diversity, "La Torre" of Valencia, making the different applications available to them.

"It is undeniable that we live in an increasingly digital reality. With these applications, we want to support the learning, autonomy and creativity of people with functional diversity," said Carlos Hernandez Franco, professor at the ETSI of Telecommunications and researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) of the UPV.

Both applications, designed for mobile phones and tablets in an Android environment, combine textual information with pictograms to make them available to all users of the occupational centre.

The Virtual Reality App uses this technology to transform the environments where people with the functional diversity of the Vocational Centre develop their activities. The UPV and BUPT team has virtualised its different elements, from shelves and tables to chairs, doors, etc.; it has also converted into VR the tools they use, such as scissors, pens, erasers, paper, etc., as well as the activities they perform in this environment. "All in all, this application gives them greater autonomy and also promotes an increase in self-esteem," explains Hernández Franco.

Likewise, the professionals who carry out their functions in the vocational centre see this technological proposal as a support tool to dynamise the users' learning processes.

On the other hand, the Augmented Reality App facilitates learning how to use tools, how to perform a specific task, etc.

The development of these applications is also part of the "Inclusive Mobile" project, a collaboration between the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
