QS World University Rankings 2025

UPV recognised by QS as one of the 200 most sustainable universities in the world

[ 11/12/2024 ]

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025, the third edition of the sustainability ranking carried out by the prestigious British consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), recognises the Universitat Politčcnica de Valčncia (UPV) as one of the 200 most outstanding universities in the world in this field.

The company, along with the Jiao Tong University of China -responsible for the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), popularly known as the Shanghai ranking- and the Times Higher Education (THE) publication, is considered one of the three most prestigious indicators of university assessment in the world and places the UPV in 179th place in the overall ranking, as well as considering it the best technical university in Spain and the number 1 in the Valencian Community in terms of sustainability.

The only technical university in Spain in the top 200 and number 1 in the Valencian Community

At a national level, the UPV is the fourth best university, as well as the technical university, ahead of the Universitat Politčcnica de Catalunya (215th) and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (307th), which complete the podium.

Likewise, the institution currently headed by Jose E. Capilla is the only Valencian university in the top 200 of the ranking (the University of Valencia, 257th, and the University of Alicante, 303rd, are in second and third place, respectively).

1,744 universities analysed, and 3 categories of indicators

In this edition, QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025 has analysed a total of 1744 universities (661 Asian, 556 European, 409 American, 70 African and 47 Oceanic), with Spain as the 9th most represented country (tied with Japan, with 44 universities present). The United States, with 239; China, with 114; and the United Kingdom, with 98, are the three countries with the most educational institutions included.

For the ranking, QS establishes three categories of indicators: environmental impact (45% of the final score), social impact (45%) and governance (10%). It further subdivides the first into environmental education (17%), environmental sustainability (15%) and environmental research (13%); and the second into equality (12%), employability and opportunities (11%), knowledge sharing (10%), educational impact (7%) and health and well-being (5%).

Internationally recognised by all top-level rankings

This indicator adds to the other positive assessments the UPV receives in all the top international rankings. Not surprisingly, in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings, which considered a total of 5663 institutions from 106 countries, the UPV was included for the thirteenth consecutive year in the top 500 worldwide, as well as being highlighted in its most recent edition for subjects such as the best university in Spain to study Agrifood and Forest Engineering and Art and Design and in the top 200 in the world in up to 9 subjects.

In turn, last June, THE recognised the UPV as one of the 200 universities with the greatest social and economic impact in the world, and the Shanghai ranking, considered the most prestigious indicator in the world in this field, highlighted it last 15th August as the best technical university in Spain for the 20th consecutive year.
