An assessment tool that allows us to make systematic judgements about the extent to which a particular behaviour or feature is achieved. In other words, observers’ action is not solely aimed at indicating the presence or absence of a behaviour or feature (as in the checklists); observers also have to make a personal judgement on the degree to which this feature is presented. This allows verification of the degree of intensity which differentiates students with regard to the measured features.
These scales imply the establishment of "observation units" drafted in terms of categories. It is not appropriate to make a comprehensive list, but rather to focus on significant aspects.
Purpose
To assess skills that can be divided into a series of clearly defined acts, such as operating a microscope, using audio-visual or computer media.
To assess a process where the behaviours to be observed are ordered in a logical way.
