Peer Assessment

Definition

An assessment technique with which students evaluate each other.

Purpose

  • To help the student observe different ways of doing things and get feedback with a plurality of styles and perspectives on the construction of knowledge.
  • To share and change roles in the evaluation process, without the teacher relinquishing responsibility.
  • To encourage students’ responsible involvement within the cooperative team by evaluating the individual work of each of the members and also the final work of the team.
  • To promote educational situations involving participation, dialogue and relationships, which enable students to analyse their own work and that of their peers in an ethical and critical way.
  • To encourage student collaboration and coordination to carry out assigned tasks.
  • To contribute, in a positive way, to academic performance.
  • To enable participatory learning experiences.
  • To foster individual and team work.
